| The Winnemucca Community Garden has created an intergenerational, multi-racia, varied income-level community where families & individuals can garden together and learn from one another. Gardening helps break the cycle of poverty by increasing self-esteem, providing extra nutrition, and creating positive family experiences. The requested VISTA volunteers will work on three programs that address poverty: 1. The Community Gardening Program addresses the need for more community related affordable recreation, garden stweardship, and therapeutic outlets in the community. 2. The Children's Education Program focuses on alleviating poverty by teaching the community's children that they can grow their own food and encouraging their awareness of the greater environment around them. 3. The Hunger, Health, & Nutrition Program activities center around strengthening food security in the community. All of the VISTA members will organize core groups of community volunteers to carry on the programs after the initial setup and development work is completed. Ad provided by Idealist.org |
